Inspired by her Jamaican born and Brooklyn bred Caribbean background. Akynos did her Masters thesis on food and her global travels. A self renowned food snob, the thesis titled The Greatest Revenge connected Akynos’ connection with her life, world travels and the connection of her Jamaican nationality and the African diaspora. The theme of food is represented in her name (edible) and has been a long standing theme in her work over the past several years. 

With an experimental burlesque troupe, Koffee and Queen Sugar, Akynos aims to express Black art through dance with subtle food themes. Since Covid, these themes have emerged stronger in her work with food being the central theme in her teaching about racism and the close connection with gastronomy. As indicated in her art project Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Berlin 2020 and Lisbon 2021) which was greatly influenced by two things: The aversion to spices as easily found in much of the cuisine throughout her second home Berlin and how angry it made her taste buds.  And the critically accliamed book The Delectable Negro by author Vincent Woodard, who wrote about the literal and figurative consumption of Black bodies by white people. Akynos currently hosts an Annual Fundraiser for The BSWC, Heauxgiving which reclaims and commemorates Indigenous People’s Day (Formerly American Thanksgiving) in order to raise awareness for her group and operational funds by offering an all you can eat menu of dishes inspired by her Jahmerican background.
